Delivered Pellet Historical Prices FutureMetrics has estimated the historical delivered (CIF) price of wood pellets from international trade data. Data on the value and quantity of imported pellets gives insight into the prices that buyers are paying for the fuel. Because most of the international trade of pellets is under long-term contracts, those prices reflect a competitive, long-run, market-clearing value. The spot price is influenced by short-term supply and demand imbalances.  If the market is in a state of excess supply, prices fall. If the market in a state of excess demand, prices rise. Long-term offtake agreement prices are based on mutually sustainable values for the pellet fuel. Those prices are unaffected by short-term supply and demand imbalances.  FutureMetrics has estimated CIF prices for several common destinations, including ARA and Japan. Russia currently accounts for approximately 6 percent of world wood pellet exports and currently ranks eighth in the world for total wood pellet production, with 3 percent of total world wood pellet production. Russia produced approximately 1.75 million metric tons of wood pellets last year, up 32 percent when compared to 2016 production. The increase is attributed to continued strong demand from the European Union and new markets in Asia, including Japan and China. The country exported approximately 1.44 million metric tons of wood pellets in 2017, up 34 percent when compared to 2016. This year, wood pellet exports are expected to reach 1.5 million metric tons. Leading exports destinations for Russian wood pellets include Denmark, South Korea, Belgium and Sweden. Wood pellet imports into South Korea and Japan have grown quickly in the past few years. South Korea imported 2.4 Mt of wood pellets in 2017, while Japan imported over 0.5 Mt. Meanwhile, PKS consumption has also risen rapidly in both countries, to 1.5 Mt in 2017. At the same time, there is growing demand for local biomass in both Japan and Korea. Research for our Asian Pacific Biomass report concluded that the two countries used approximately 4.3 million bone dry metric tonnes (BDMT) of wood chips in 2017, most of which were sourced locally. This figure is likely to increase significantly in the future, due to preferential subsidies in both countries for locally sourced biomass. The Japanese FiT provides a higher rate of support for local forestry residues of YEN32/kWh for projects above 2 MW, and YEN40/kWh for projects below 2MW. In Japan, the market is supported by a feed-in-tariff (FIT) scheme which provides a 20-year subsidy to firms producing renewable energy.  Biomass has been proved hugely popular.  By March 2017, almost 12GW of biomass projects had been approved under the FIT scheme, far exceeding the quantity envisaged under Japan’s Best Energy Mix 2030 scenario of 2.7-4GW.  This has forced the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) to act to curb the growth of biomass power, and from 2018 new biomass applications >10MW have been removed from the main FIT and switched to a new bidding system.
